What Is the Open Compute Project?
From the outside, the tech realm may seem like a secretive, competitive industry. While the industry certainly fosters ample competition, it also invites collaboration as industry leaders prioritize efficiency, sustainability, and innovation. The Open Compute Project (OCP) is a prime example of that collaboration. Read on to find out more about this ongoing effort to create efficient computing infrastructure in a rapidly changing world.
What Is the Open Compute Project?
What Is the Open Compute Project?
The Open Compute Project originated in 2009, when Meta – formerly Facebook – set out to design the world’s most energy-efficient data center. The data center needed to operate at a historically high level – but at the lowest possible cost. The end result was a staggering 40 percent improvement in energy efficiency. It was also 24 percent less costly to operate than previous data center iterations. Upon completing the data center, Meta saw an opportunity: to share its designs with the public in an open-source capacity, thus moving the tech realm in a more sustainable direction. With that, Meta launched the Open Compute Project (OCP) Foundation. Today, the organization boasts more than 250 members across industries as the model is applied outside of data centers. That membership includes software companies like Microsoft, but it also includes specialty suppliers like Positronic.
What Are Open Compute Power Connectors?
Tech innovation requires cutting-edge, nimble components – like the connectors available through Positronic. As a proud sponsor and active participant in OCP, Positronic is a go-to resource for OCP members in need of efficient power connector products. Positronic has had a hand in OCP’s connector specifications from the beginning. That experience has included co-authoring many aspects of OCP’s Open Rack V3 (ORV3) Power Shelf Universal Input Connector specification. Positronic also designed the OCP ORV3 universal AC input connector, a crucial component designed after decades of experience developing niche power connectors.
Our Relevant Connectors
At Positronic, our team of industry experts serves the OCP community in two ways: first, by providing a wide variety of OCP power connector options; second, by working with customers to bring their OCP-compliant end products to market. In terms of our connectors, we offer a wide array of options. That includes everything from standard free cable and panel mount versions to tailored connectors with modified PC tail lengths. Ultimately, we have the expertise and decades of experience necessary to help every customer meet their program needs as they work to build OCP-compliant hardware.
